Mathematics
MA430: Mathematics Project (10 ECTS)
In this module, the student works on a Mathematics problem under the supervision of an academic at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics. The student is required to produce a mid-term project report, a final project report, and to deliver an oral presentation on the project to members of the School.
Taught in Semester(s) 1 and 2. Examined in Semester(s) 2.
Workload: 200 hours (24 Tutorial hours, 176 Self study hours).
Module Learning Outcomes.
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
- conduct a literature search on a mathematical topic;
- work under supervision and individually on a mathematical subject;
- organise their results into a written document;
- use computational methods as required;
- use a mathematics typesetting software or an equation editor in a word processor;
- summarise their report into a visual presentation;
- deliver a clear presentation of their results;
- answer questions about their report.
Indicative Content
The aim of the module is for the student to work individually on a mathematical problem under the supervision of an academic at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics. Typically, the student and supervisor agree on a subject and meet weekly to discuss it and make progress for 1 hour or so. First there is a preliminary "mid-project report" to write (10% of final mark), as a first step towards the redaction of the final project report. The latter document has to be produced and submitted after about 16 weeks of interaction (80% of final mark). A 15 minutes oral presentation accounts for the remaining 10% of the final mark.
The topics covered vary from year to year.
